Landscape of Asian Shorts

Landscape of Asian Shorts

As of 2018, BISFF has joined the coveted list of Oscar®-qualifying festival, the first such festival in Korea (along with the Bucheon International Animation Festival} and one of the very few in Asia. In fact, prior to BISFF and BIAF, only three other festivals in Asia have had that honor: Singapore International Film Festival, Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia, and Hiroshima International Animation Festival. With 'Landscape of Asian Shorts 1: Oscar® Special', BISFF is happy to present six Asian short films which won the Oscar®-qualifying prizes at these festivals, in collaboration with their respective programming and organizing teams. The 'Landscape of Asian Shorts 2: JAFF Special' will introduce five Indonesian short films curated by the Jogja-NETPAC Asian Film Festival. Here is a message from JAFF programmer Mohammad Reza Fahriyansyah: "On behalf of our festival, I would like to express our sincere gratitude to BISFF for kindly providing a space for Indonesian films in this year's edition. I feel proud to present this program of five shorts films which all screened at JAFF and which will hopefully give a picture of contemporary Indonesia. Watching films is a way to see the complexity and diversity of issues that society is facing. The 1998 Reform in Indonesia opened the door to freedom of assembly and speech which was closed for 32 year under the New Order regime. Afterwards, film communities appeared ubiquitously across the Archipelago; and the filmmakers seem to consider films a reflection of the reality they are living as well as means to fight against injustice. Hence, short film has been a popular medium to voice problems in Indonesia and to address the issue of lndonesian-ness. JAFF contributes to introducing Asian cinema to lndonesian public while also becoming an intersection for broader sectors including arts, culture and tourism." Finally, 'Landscape of Asian Shorts 3: Tales and Superstitions from the Far East' will bring you six outlandish films full to the brim with the bizarre, the paranormal, the spiritual and the mythical. Prepare to dive into an ungodly world of ghouls and ghosts, uncanny rituals, subaquatic monsters and deviant pantheons!
